Music for Relaxation and Meditatation

The Healing Power of Music

Music has been used for centuries and throughout many cultures to move us emotionally and assist in healing. Music can be considered the universal language. We have all experienced the innate way that music elicits emotional responses. Even as far back as the 16th century, music has been used in silent movies to create a particular feeling. Music has the ability to trigger sadness, fear, agitation, and feelings of joy and love.

Listening to music can increase our wellbeing as well as singing and playing a musical instrument. Adding music into your life whether it is meditating with music, singing in the shower, or joining a drumming group, will reap many rewards. You will be on the right path to a happier and healthier life.

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese author and pseudo-scientist, had conducted many experiments on the affect of words and sound on water. Through his experiments, we see how certain words and sounds create the formation of beautiful crystals in water. We also see how other sounds and words inhibit the formation of these crystals. His books, The Hidden Messages in Water and Water Crystal Healing; Music and Images to Restore Your Well-Being, illustrate how words and sounds can influence our bodies. Words of love and hope can have a more positive affect on our body than words of hate and despair. Since we are composed of approximately 60% water and our brain is composed of approximately 73%, it is beneficial for us to be more selective of what words we say and what we listen to.

The Cleveland Clinic has found that music therapy has the ability to help on many levels: physical, emotional, spiritual, social and cognitive. There is growing evidence that music therapy can improve the quality of our lives in the following ways:

  • helps improve the outcomes of invasive procedures by reducing anxiety and discomfort, thus decreasing the need for sedatives
  • promotes wellness
  • decreases the stress response
  • alleviates or decreases pain
  • enhances memory
  • promotes physical rehabilitation
  • energizes or calms our nervous system
  • increases positive emotions
  • helps you to cope with physical and emotional pain
  • aids in self-reflection
  • increases motivation
  • aids in releasing repressed emotions
